Good Old Fashioned Blogging

Once upon a time Green Park didn’t really know much about using Web 2.0 things. Then John Sutton, seen in the picture below visited our school to deliver some Knowledge Box training. He also happened to mention blogging. At the time (2005/2006) we here looking at lots of different possibilities for a school website. John was in the right place at the right time and for the “oh well we better have something” reason (and it was cheaper) we chose to blog. From that day our (and mine) view on ICT, collaboration with pupils, parents, community, teaching, learning and connections with the world changed to the point where pupils, such as Lily (and she isn’t the only one), can prepare presentations for grown up audiences at Teachmeets using tools such as Google Apps without seeing it as a task, more a “this is what I do – here it is”.

Lily also represents the gradual shift from the big people in our school preparing and publishing content, which they still do, to a growing sense of blog ownership by our pupils. They are skilled and knowledgeable about what to do and how to do it. Our/their blogs are littered with great examples of their learning and their life experiences..

Blogging is great and everyday I see, across the world, examples of class blogs and the consequent connections that bring to life the brilliant world of education. It is quite a strange feeling to suddenly see your class or your name featured on another class blog on the other side of the world. How did that happen?? For us it was thanks to John Sutton and, of course the other person in the team, Peter Ford. Thanks to them both for their brilliant support and work!

ps….we now have an oldies for ICT club and guess how they do ICT….blogging! http://news.greenparkschool.org.uk/

Looking back through the mammoth collection of blog posts from our school this, I think, is our first. How things have changed!

Year 1 had a great day at Chester Zoo. The day started at very early but everyone arrived on time and once the coach was full away we went. Once we got there we headed to the Education Centre where we found out about the different things that living things do – some things are a bit smelly! Then we had our picnic lunch – we didn’t sit next to Year 2 – they are a bit yacky for us !

After that we explored the zoo and came across lots of strange and unusual creatures – and they were just the children in our class! The bat cave was great even though it was a little bit dark but Anna and Luke were very brave and knew which way to go. We finished the day by playing in the adventure park and then we got the train back to the entrance, got on the coach and away we went.

  1. I enjoyed reading your bolt about the visit to Chester Zoo.

My favourite part was when you said you saw lots of strange and unusual creatures – and they were the children in your class! That made me laugh.

I’ve been to Chester Zoo and I enjoyed it too.
